  • Class Year and Anticipated Graduation Date

Class year is determined by the predicted year and month of graduation. Students are classified according to the number of credits they have completed by September:

    First-year students 0-29.5 credits*
    Sophomore standing 30-59.5 credits
    Junior standing 60-89.5 credits
Senior standing 90 or more credits

*Note: Students entering directly from high school with more than 29 credits are held to all policies governing first-year students.

Although university commencement ceremonies only occur in May, degrees are also awarded in August and January. In all cases, students must inform the Office of Advising and Academic Services of their intentions to graduate prior to the first day of their last semester of registration. Students are not permitted to preregister for the semester after their anticipated graduation date except with special permission.

Students are reviewed for graduation eligibility based on their declared class year and graduation month. Therefore, students must keep the Office of Advising and Academic Services apprised of their anticipated graduation year and month.

If you anticipate degree completion prior to your declared graduation year and month, you may submit a request to change your graduation date online at:

    My Grad Date

Any requests for graduation dates earlier or beyond what is necessary to complete degree requirements will be denied.

  • Dean's Recommendations

Do you need a Dean's Recommendation for law school, graduate school, or transfer purposes? The Office of Advising and Academic Services writes Dean's Recommendations and Dean's Certifications for all SAS students, which:

In order to request a Dean's Recommendation, please forward the information to .

Dean's Recommendation forms usually take about two weeks to process, depending upon the volume of requests. Please try to give our office plenty of lead time so that we can ensure the timely arrival of your recommendation.

Dean's Recommendations for the Common Application for Transfer Out of Rutgers

Students using the Common Application to transfer to another undergraduate school outside of Rutgers are processed through the Registrar's Office.

  • DIPLOMA APPLICATION

  • Graduate Courses

SAS students may register for graduate-level courses with the written approval of the graduate program offering the course. Students must obtain this written approval, either electronically or as signed documentation, and present it to the Office of Advising and Academic Services for processing. The Office of Advising and Academic Services will confirm the approval and add the course to the student’s schedule.

  • Nonmatriculating Students

    • Nonmatriculated (non-degree-seeking/visiting) status in the New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences is available to students who wish to enroll in undergraduate classes but do not need to earn degree credits, and do not wish to complete a degree at Rutgers
    • Important Resources:

Nonmatriculated enrollment lets you. . .

    • Complete courses for admission to graduate or professional programs
    • Take classes for career advancement or personal enrichment
    • Finish a major or minor begun during your first Rutgers bachelor’s degree -- A second bachelor’s degree is not conferred. Instead, a narrative comment will be added to your transcript stating that the major or minor was completed after the initial bachelor’s degree was conferred. This option is available only to Rutgers alumni.
    • Register part time (below 12 credits)
    • Enroll in Fall, Spring, Winter or Summer

    Nonmatriculated enrollment has restrictions

    • Complete or receive a degree.
    • Attempt more than a total of 30 credits.
    • Earn degree credits or a grade-point average -- Grades earned will appear on the transcript but are E-prefixed to prevent any calculations of GPA or degree credits
    • Improve a Rutgers GPA.
    • Enroll in graduate-level courses -- Apply to Rutgers Graduate Admissions.
    • Receive financial aid.
    • Live in undergraduate campus housing.
    • Receive a transcript evaluation of course work completed elsewhere -- except to verify prerequisites for upper level courses, if needed.
    • Matriculating students at Rutgers may not "step out" of a degree program in progress to take courses on a nonmatriculating basis.
    • Students academically suspended or dismissed may not return to Rutgers on a nonmatriculating basis.  Contact a dean in your school for information about readmission requirements.

    Apply

    Register

    • New students entering in fall or spring will be contacted to attend a scheduled orientation where they will receive academic advising and make their initial registration.
    • Orientation for fall registration is held in late August.  Orientation for spring registration is in mid-January.
    • Continuing students register independently via the online WebReg system.
    • Nonmatriculating students register beginning on "All Students Registration Day" posted on the University registration calendar.

  • Pass/No Credit Courses

Students who have completed 90 or more credits (seniors) may take up to two courses (8 credits maximum, one course per semester) on a Pass/No Credit basis. Grades of A, B, and C correspond to Pass; grades of D and F to No Credit.

    Pass/No Credit Policies- For Seniors

    • Only free elective courses may be taken on a pass/no credit basis. You may not select this option for a course being used to satisfy your major, minor, core curriculum goal, or other graduation credential. Courses that could potentially satisfy an unfulfilled requirement may not be taken pass/no credit.
    • Courses through Study Abroad may not be taken on a pass/no credit basis.
    • Honors seminars and department-based honors courses and honors sections of courses may not be taken on a pass/no credit basis.
    • Students pursuing a second degree through SAS may not use the pass/no credit option.
    • The pass/no credit option may be applied to only one course in each of your final two semesters before graduation.
    • Deadlines are binding. The pass/no credit option may not be rescinded once the deadline has passed.

    Deadlines for Submission

    • Fall semester: September 30
    • Spring semester: February 20
    • Six-week summer session: 10th calendar day after class begins
    • Winter session courses may not be taken on a pass/no credit basis

    Pass/No Credit Application Form

The above restrictions do not apply to courses that are only offered on a pass/no credit basis.

  • Reduced Credit Load

    Full-time Requirements and Exceptions

The School of Arts and Sciences is a full-time institution; we are dedicated to supporting your on-time graduation and require our students to enroll in at least 12 credits per semester (though we advise 15) to maintain full-time status and graduate in four years.

If you are experiencing medical or other extenuating circumstances and wish to appeal for a reduced course load of fewer than 12 credits, please review the information below and follow the provided instructions.

Students Eligible to Apply for a Reduced Credit Load

  • Reinstatement

If you are Suspended or Dismissed from the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), you are not eligible for continued enrollment without successful completion of Summer Session coursework at Rutgers- New Brunswick. You must meet all conditions stipulated and explained in the letter of Suspension or Dismissal. In documented extraordinary circumstances, you may submit an Academic Appeal. Students must be able to demonstrate readiness for successful academic work, the ability to raise their cumulative GPA to graduation level, and a realistic plan for completing degree requirements.

    Grace Period Remediation

Your Suspension or Dismissal may be reversed if you can raise your cumulative GPA to the required standard (determined by your class year and number of terms enrolled) by completing course work during the Rutgers- NB  Summer Session immediately following your Suspension or Dismissal, no later than August 17th.

    • If you are able to raise your cumulative GPA sufficiently you will be taken off of the Suspension or Dismissal list but may be placed on Warning or Probation depending on your term GPA from the previous Spring Semester.
    • Students subject to Suspension or Dismissal may utilize the Grace Period Remediation option.
    • For students subject to Suspension only: If you believe you will be unable to raise your GPA to the required standard during Summer Session you may decide to pursue the PASS option instead of Grace Period Remediation (see below).

    “PASS” Probation After Sustained Suspension

If you are subject to Suspension (not Dismissal**) and it is impossible or impractical to complete enough course work during the Summer Session Grace Period to raise your cumulative GPA to the required standard, you may use the “PASS” (Probation After Sustained Suspension) option.

To satisfy this option, you must complete six new degree credits, in two courses during the Rutgers - New Brunswick Summer Session and obtain a term GPA of 2.75 or higher by the end of the Summer Session term.

    • The Suspension awill be sustained and it will remain in your academic file but you will be reinstated for the upcoming academic year.
    • Be aware, you cannot earn new degree credits for any courses that are E-credited or in which you previously earned degree credit, including grades of D that are ineligible for the F/D Repeat Policy, grades of C or higher or courses that are below your placement in languages, math or writing.
    • If you take courses in pursuit of Grace Period Remediation, they can alternately count toward fulfillment of the “PASS” option.
    • If you choose to enroll in more than six credits of summer coursework, your GPA for all summer coursework must still be at least 2.75.

    Conditional Reenrollment

For students applying to return following Academic Suspension in a previous year

Students who either failed to meet the required academic standards in the Summer following their Suspension (not Dismissal**), or who did not attempt to complete coursework, must apply for Summer Conditional Reenrollment.

Conditionally Reenrolled students must complete six new degree credits, in two courses, during the Rutgers - New Brunswick Summer Session and obtain a term GPA of 2.75 or higher by the end of the Summer Session term.

    • Students are guaranteed one opportunity to address their Academic Suspension with Summer Session coursework. After the first attempt, future reenrollment is determined by review of your academic record and the viability of successful degree completion.
    • You must apply for Conditional Reenrollment by the advertised deadlines; applications will begin to be processed in early February in the order in which they were received.
    • Be aware, you cannot earn new degree credits for courses that are E-credited or in which you previously earned degree credit, including grades of D that are ineligible for the F/D Repeat Policy and grades of C or higher.
    • If you choose to enroll in more than six credits of summer coursework, your GPA for all summer coursework must still be at least 2.75.
    • Registration for future semesters is contingent on successful completion of all requirements.

If you are successful in meeting the requirements for Conditional Reenrollment you will be placed on Probation in your next semester of enrollment. In addition, if you then fail to earn a term GPA of 2.00 or higher, SAS reserves the right to rescind your reenrollment and may require you to sit-out the Spring term and apply for Conditional Reenrollment in the following Summer.

** Students subject to Academic Dismissal are not eligible to utilize the PASS (Probation After Sustained Suspension) Option or Conditional Reenrollment except by successful Appeal to the Faculty Committee for Academic Standing.

  • Second Degree Students

    • Important Resources:

Second degree students have already completed a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university and now willing to invest a substantial amount of time, money and effort to complete another BA or BS degree in a  major area entirely different from their previous major.

Before you apply, you should know that a second bachelor’s degree is not a highly regarded credential, and that undergraduate study beyond the first degree is sometimes interpreted as redundant or as a sign that the student is unable or unwilling to take on the challenge of graduate school. In other words,  if you have the preparation to move on to graduate work, you should.  Many master’s programs do not require completion of an undergraduate major in the same field of study.  If you are planning to apply to graduate or professional school but need to complete some undergraduate prerequisites first, you may be better off completing them as a nonmatriculating student.  Second-degree students enrolled in other Rutgers-New Brunswick schools are not eligible to transfer into SAS.

Earning a second degree from the School of Arts & Sciences represents a substantial commitment whether your first degree is from a unit of Rutgers or another institution. If you have considered ALL of your options and have determined that a second bachelor’s degree is needed to achieve your professional objectives, then this is the right path for you.

    • Your Rutgers GPA is below 2.500, the minimum requirement for admission.
    • You are interested in completing a Second Degree in a major that you already hold a BA or BS in.
    • You have not yet completed your first bachelor’s degree.
    • You want to raise your first degree GPA.
    • You want to take just a few courses toward applying for graduate school. Many master’s programs do not require completion of an undergraduate major in the same field of study. Sometimes, they require undergraduate prerequisites which can be achieved as a  Nonmatriculating Student.
    • You are unable to attend classes at the Rutgers New Brunswick campus. Second Degree students must take all their classes at the New Brunswick campus.
    • It has been many years since you earned your first degree and you are considering a career change for which you have limited or no academic background.
    • Your first degree is from a professional program, such as those offered by the Schools of Pharmacy, Engineering or Biological & Environmental Sciences, and your new interest is in a arts and sciences discipline.
    • Your proposed academic plan will require completion of a minimum of 30 new credits.
    • Minimum 2.500 cumulative GPA  in your first bachelor’s degree.
    • Official transcripts  are necessary as proof of your first degree and must be submitted before a candidate can be accepted as a Second Degree student.
    • Official WES Evaluations  (or companies similar to the World Education Service, Inc-WES) are needed for all students who hold International degrees. Students may also be asked to submit course evaluations, if necessary. These International Degree evaluations will provide US equivalencies for course credits, years of study, and degree. If the evaluation declares your international degree as not equivalent to a four-year, US Bachelor's degree, you will not be accepted as a Second Degree student, but instead you will be admitted as an undergraduate transfer student through Undergraduate Admissions.
    • Intended major already selected must be distinctly different from any degrees earned. (Undecided students are not accepted into the Second Degree programs. Students who are undecided should study on a  nonmatriculating basis until they decide on a major program of study.) If you eventually apply for matriculating, second degree study, the E-prefixes from the nonmatriculating courses will be removed and all earned grades and credits will be calculated into the grade point average, even if the courses are not required for the second degree.
    • Second Degree students are NOT required to complete a minor.
    • Second-Degree students may NOT take courses outside of Rutgers–New Brunswick after acceptance.
    • Second-Degree students may NOT change their major without prior approval from the nontraditional dean who oversees Second-Degree Students.

The Seven Steps to Complete an SAS Second Degree

Second degree candidates must complete the following requirements:

    • If your first bachelor’s degree is from Rutgers: Apply using the New Brunswick SAS Reenrollment Application. You will receive a decision letter from one of our office.
    • If your first bachelor’s degree is NOT from Rutgers: Apply using the University Undergraduate Application through Undergraduate Admissions. You will be able to check your application status online. (Note: You are NOT permitted to attend a STAR Day with new transfer students. Instead, you will receive personalized advising from an SAS Dean.)
    • All Second Degree candidates will be contacted via email to attend a mandatory advising session designed to answer all their questions about the major and degree they intend to pursue.
    • Reenrolling Rutgers graduates will need to meet with a Dean before their reenrollment application can be processed, while students admitted through Undergraduate Admissions will meet with a Dean after they are admitted.

    • A minimum of 30 new credits. All credits must be taken at the New Brunswick campus. No transfer courses are permitted.

    • If you are coming from an institution other than Rutgers, you will receive a transfer evaluation.  Any courses deemed equivalent to Rutgers courses will be posted individually to your Rutgers transcript, and non- equivalent courses will be posted as lump sum credits. All Second Degree students will receive a total of 90 degree credits posted to their transcripts in a combination of equivalent courses and lump sum credits.

    • See list of SAS Majors.
    • Review the information on the website of your major department and locate the contact information for the major advisor.
    • Declare your major at MyMajor.
    • Second Degree students are NOT required to complete a minor.
    • See list of SAS Majors
    • Second Degree students are NOT required to complete a minor

Completion of the Core Curriculumis a requirement for all Second Degree students. Courses from your first degree will be evaluated to determine whether they fulfill Core requirements.  However, all Second Degree candidates must complete at least two new Contemporary Challenges courses [CCO] and [CCD], and one new Writing and Communication course (WCr or WCd).  Courses taken as part of the first degree cannot be used to satisfy these Core requirements AND additional Core courses may be required, even for students who graduated from Rutgers. The final decision regarding the number of Core courses that you will have to complete will be made by the SAS dean after an evaluation of your previous course work. Required core courses can be taken alongside intended  major courses. Second Degree students are not eligible to have their Core Curriculum waived through the New Jersey Statewide Transfer Agreement (NJSWTA).

    • All Second Degree students are expected to maintain a minimum 2.000 term GPA and follow all SAS Academic Standing policies.

    Registration

    Students register via WebReg.

    • Newly-admitted second degree students may register in August for the fall semester and in mid-January for the spring semester.
    • Continuing second degree students register as students with senior status ("on 90-Degree Credit Registration Day"). See the registration calendar for more information.

If you intend to take a course which requires a pre-requisite, you may be required to take a placement test. Students with international bachelor's degrees are required to take the English placement test.

Your acceptance into the program does not guarantee that the courses you need will be available to you. If a class is closed, there are two options: 1) you can choose a different class; or 2) you can try to get into the class that is closed by contacting the individual department. Procedures for special permission vary considerably, so be sure to check the department’s webpage first.

  • Study Abroad

    Study Abroad Brazil

Study abroad experiences are available to SAS students through Rutgers University as well as through other universities or outside organizations.

    Study Abroad through Rutgers University

The University conducts study abroad programs at many foreign Universities. For more information about study abroad, see http://global.rutgers.edu/study-abroad.

    • Seniors planning to study abroad in their final semester before graduation should meet with their major/minor advisors and let the SAS Office for Seniors know about their plans. This is necessary to ensure a smooth graduation certification.

    Study Abroad through Another University

Students may participate in study abroad programs offered through other Universities or outside organizations.

After identifying the program and courses that you plan to take, please follow these steps:

    • Fill out the Non-Rutgers Study Abroad Course Proposal Form. This form lets SAS know that you are planning to study abroad. You will indicate the courses that you plan to take, and the Rutgers departments that offer similar courses will evaluate these courses to determine if the courses and credits can transfer back toward your Rutgers degree.

Non-Rutgers Study Abroad Course Proposal Form

    • Fill out the Student Withdrawal form. This lets the university know when you plan to be gone from Rutgers, and also when you plan to return. You will be able to register for classes for the semester when you return during the preregistration process, just as you would be able to do if you were a current student.

    Student Withdrawal Form

    • If you are an on-campus resident, contact University Housing. If you have signed a housing contract that will be in effect during the time you are away from Rutgers, you must notify the Housing Office in writing of your intention to cancel your contract. Students who do not cancel their housing within the prescribed time period are subject to a cancellation fee.

If you desire housing upon your return, see the Housing Office before you leave to learn about the procedures to obtain housing.

All questions concerning deadlines and procedures for housing should be addressed to the housing office on the campus where you currently reside.

When you return, make sure you send your transcripts (official copy, directly from the university where you studied) to one of the SAS Advising Centers.

  • UPDATING STUDENT INFORMATION

  • VERIFICATION OF STUDENT ENROLLMENT

  • Withdrawal from All Courses

Matriculated students are expected to maintain continuous enrollment throughout their degree program. However, in some cases students may need to withdraw from their entire semester due to illness, military activation, or other circumstances.

Students are required to notify the University of any departure or absence from a semester by submitting a completed Student Withdrawal form.

Students considering a withdrawal from the semester are encouraged to meet with an SAS Advisor in advance, to discuss the ways in which their academic plans, current term bill, and future eligibility for financial aid (if an aid recipient) could be affected by a semester withdrawal. However, do not miss submitting your Student Withdrawal form by the Refund Deadline while awaiting an advising appointment.

Students who take a withdraw from a semester are permitted to reenroll for future semesters by completing the free, online SAS Reenrollment form.*

*Students whose cumulative GPA is below a 2.0 may be required to attend Rutgers Summer Session prior to returning for a fall or spring semester.

**Courses taken outside of Rutgers during a leave of absence are considered transfer courses. For information on transfer course policies at SAS, please see the SAS Transfer Coursespage.

    Student Withdrawal Form

Tuition Refund for Withdrawal from School

    • Students who withdraw from their entire semester may be eligible for full or partial refunds, depending on the effective date of the withdrawal. The effective date is the date you submit the completed Student Withdrawal form.
    • Students may use Webreg to drop courses or cancel their entire schedule prior to the beginning of a semester and receive a 100% refund. However, once the semester begins, the online registration system will not permit students to drop their final class. To withdraw completely, students must submit the Student Withdrawal form via Scarlet Hub/One Stop.
    • Failure to attend class is not equivalent to a formal leave of absence or withdrawal, and students will not receive an adjustment of charges or grades unless a Student Withdrawal form is filed with the University.
    • Refund deadlines are posted online at https://finance.rutgers.edu/student-abc/refunds/withdrawals-school
