Independent Study

Registration for an independent study is limited to Juniors and Seniors who have taken introductory courses in the subject in question, have identified a faculty mentor who will oversee the project, and have obtained faculty approval. Such a project is most often done in the major (most departments have 300 or 400- level independent study/research courses in place), but could be completed through the SAS Independent Study and Research course 01:090:393, 394 (for Juniors) or 01:090:493, 494 (for Seniors).

Doing an independent study/research project gives a student an opportunity for academic inquiry not available through regular coursework.SAS students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.000. Approval of the project is at the discretion of the Dean, who reviews the proposal and the applicant’s overall academic record.
