The SAS Major and Minor Fair occurs once every Fall and Spring semester. It is an opportunity to investigate various academic and career options in one place, at one time!

Students can speak with representatives of academic departments/programs, student services offices, and a variety of Rutgers Schools and Colleges by visiting their tables at the fair. The event is designed to help students who have not yet declared their major/minor as well as those who have declared, but still may be uncertain about their choice of major, minor, or career path.

SAS Major & Minor Fair To Do

  • Visit departments offering majors, minors, or certificates relating to my interests.
    • Ask department Advisors about recommended introductory courses and supplementary courses to explore.
  • Meet with department Advisors to discuss what I can gain from this major, minor, or certificate program, both in my academic and professional development.
    • Inquire about “outside-the-classroom” opportunities, such as research, internships, or study-away programs offered through the department(s).
  • Be open to exploration of options, including introducing myself to academic programs I have not studied before.

{slider Sophomores}

  • Visit and connect with undergraduate Advisors of my prospective and/or declared major(s) and minor(s).
    • Inquire about suggested major and minor elective courses that relate much more closely with my area of interest within the subjects.
    • Identify appropriate courses to take next semester.
    • Inquire about “outside-the-classroom” opportunities, such as research, internships, or study-away programs offered through the department(s).
  • See an SAS Advisor to declare my major(s)/minor(s).
  • How can I excel in my courses, major, and minor?
    • See services for tutoring and academic coaching.
  • Research how and when to pursue internships or fieldwork.
    • See academic department of my major(s)/minor(s)
    • See Career Services
    • See an SAS Advisor
  • Discuss how I can start obtaining hands-on experiences in my field(s) of study as a student.
  • Consider whether studying elsewhere during my time at Rutgers is an option.
    • See Study Abroad to ask about studying internationally.
    • See National Student Exchange Advisor to ask about studying at another US University.

  • Connect or re-connect with my major and minor Advisors.
    • Ask if I am on track with the major/minor curricula, and whether I am ready to declare if I have yet to do so.
    • Consider and learn more about courses in various subjects outside of my major/minor that will compliment my studies and provide a well-rounded academic experience. Identify and prepare for pursuing graduate school, professional programs, or post-grad job options.
      • Confirm which entrance exam(s) are needed for advanced study, how/when to take them, and how to prepare.
      • Determine eligibility requirements for advanced study.
    • Discuss research, fieldwork, or internship opportunities.
  • Discuss preparation for pursuing professional experiences.
    • Consult with departments and Career Exploration and Success.
    • Ask about resume preparation and critiques as well as seeking recommendation letters.
    • Identify methods and practices to prepare for interviews.
  • Identify whether studying abroad or in an exchange program is still a feasible option before I graduate.
    • See Study Abroad and National Student Exchange Advisors to inquire whether I can still fit these opportunities in my time at RU!
  • Verify whether I am on track to graduate.
    • See an SAS Advisor to confirm grad date.
    • Declare major(s) and/or minor(s) if undeclared.

  • Visit departments of my major(s)/minor(s) to confirm curricula progress toward expected graduation timeline.
    • Identify timeline for post-grad opportunities-graduate school, jobs.
  • Identify deadlines for applying to graduate or professional programs and prepare materials (resume, personal statement template, and request letters of recommendation.
  • See an SAS Advisor to confirm I am on track to graduate!
    • Identify next steps toward finishing my degree.
    • Apply for diploma.
  • See a counselor at Career Explorations and Success.
    • Refine and solidify resume(s), draft cover letter framework, and discuss practice interviews.

{slider All Students}

  • Identify and connect with services at Rutgers that will be essential and helpful during my Rutgers career.
    • Student life, campus, and commuter resources.
    • On-campus involvement via organizations or groups.
    • Leadership opportunities.
    • Academic support services-tutoring, academic coaching, study groups.
  • Identify departments and subjects outside of my major/minor that will provide a well-rounded education and help develop skills transferable to future job(s) and career(s).
  • Discuss and look into non-classroom opportunities (internships, fieldwork, and research) to apply what I am learning as well as develop professional skills and experiences.
